Engineering Week 2023

21st Mar 2023

Engineering Week in Knockavilla NS is always an enjoyable showcase for the whole school. It was very special this year to be allowed return to the hall where all classes had an opportunity to engage with the activities and materials.

There was a building challenge. The four story construction had to be hurricane proof (tested condition setting 3 on a fan). There were Hexbugs to create habitats for and to try to control. Also magnetic construction sets to explore.  Even Domino tracks to try to set up with a careful hand.

But some of the biggest challenges were the simplest. The Great Paper Plane Challenge took off across the classes. Each child created a simple dart style plane, decorated according to their taste. The class champion then represented their room in a Fly Off in the yard on Friday. Overall winner was Aidan in Junior Infants.

The senior class competed to create the longest chain of paper from one A4 sheet in 20 minutes. Robert in Third class was the clear winner in this competition.

The favourite activity across all classes was creating a marble rollercoaster using pipe insulation and tape.

Many children went away with helicopters and rockets to play with and display at home, discussing and showcasing their engineering skills to with their families.

A huge thanks to Mrs Healy for organising our Engineering Week activities, and well done to the pupils in Mr Moran's class for all their work with our younger pupils during the week.
