Measuring Up!
The pupils in 3rd and 4th Classes explored length and measurement last month.
We worked together with some 1st Class friends to measure items within the school environment and recorded these measurements on a simple table. The pupils also had great fun measuring each other!
We went on to explore a lesser known, more scientific, measurement called nanotechnology. There are 1,000,000,000 nanometres in a metre!!!!! (Yes, that’s right - one billion!!!!!!!) That resulted in quite a few ‘WOW’s in our classroom. Did you know that a rib of hair is approximately 65,000 nanometres in diameter? Or that a sheet of paper is 100,000 nanometres thick? We made nanotechnology rulers and measured items in our classroom in nanometres (nm). We recorded our measurements on a simple table.
