Scientists at Work in Rang a Trí
This week was Science Week in Scoil Mhuire. Rang a Trí prepared well the week before, by creating sketches of what they thought a scientist looked like. Mind you if we were relying on the characters sketched there may not have been many advances in science in the past decades!
During the week we looked at some simple experiments and made some interesting discoveries.
How do you make butter? Can you make an egg float?
How does light travel? Can you bend light around things?
We joined other schools for a live teams event with The University of Limerick. The first show was all about the magic science of Kitchen Chemistry. The students in Limerick created all our favourite things. Slime, a volcano that erupted and made a right mess, ice-cream in a bag, vanishing ink, lava lamp and a self inflating balloon - all from common kitchen items.
Then a mad scientist from UL showed how to explode a kettle. That went down really well with the Scoil Mhuire pupils!
The second live event was all about superheroes. We learned about the amazing spider goat and saw a real cloak of invisibility created using the super power of science.
After the event we all tried to bend water and amazed everyone, including Ms O Dwyer, who proved to be a very talented 'water bender.!
