STEM Careers Day

19th Mar 2024

STEM Careers Day at Knockavilla NS

We are thrilled to share that last week we hosted a fantastic STEM Careers Day here at Knockavilla National School. Parents generously volunteered their time to come to the school and speak to our students about the importance of STEM subjects in their work lives.

Highlights from the Day:

  • Farm Safety:Students had the opportunity to meet two farmers and learn about farm safety around animals, machinery and slurry.
  • Traffic Rules:The Gardaí visited to educate students about traffic rules and to look at all the equipment used by the traffic Core. We even got to hear the sirens in the Squad Car.
  • Various Careers:We had the chance to meet a Social Worker, Garda, Farmers, Hotel Corporate Events Manager, Butcher, Planning Officer, Vet, Paramedic, Abbott Medical Device Manufacturing, Nurse, Telecommunications Manager, and more. Each professional shared insights on how STEM skills are vital in their respective fields.
  • Fire Fighter: Carol arrived with a selection of fire extinguishers and a large fire for some people to put out. Some teachers were better than others it seems. There was also an exciting experiment for the younger classes.

Exciting Activities:

  • Learning about house planning and sharing creative ideas for a playground in the area.
  • Exploring fibre optic high-speed internet technology.
  • Observing tools used in veterinary practice, including a scan of a dog's heart.
  • Gaining insights from healthcare professionals like nurses, paramedics, and staff from Abbott on medical device manufacturing.
  • Handling a real sheeps heart.
  • Engaging in a fire safety demonstration with a fire officer, Carol, who allowed children to extinguish fires with fire bottles.
  • Colouring a picture of Cashel Palace and learning about hotels and hospitality careers.
  • The Dolly and Teddy Hospital was a huge hit, delighting all the children.
  • Students had fun dressing up in cleanroom clothes and meeting the parents, especially their own, to discuss their careers.

Thank You!
We want to express our deepest gratitude to all the parents who participated in our STEM Day. You gave the children in this school the most valuable resource, that of your time. Your involvement truly made it the best day ever! Thank you for your continued partnership and support in our school community.

Warm regards,
