Here in Scoil Mhuire Knockavilla we have always been very generous towards our fellow human beings - especially those living in dire poverty throughout the world. Every Easter we donate a large amount of money to Trócaire - both through our Trócaire boxes at home and our Easter Egg Raffle in school. Unfortunately this year, because the school was closed in the weeks before Easter, we could not hold our annual Easter Egg Raffle. This, together with the lack of donations from Trócaire boxes, has meant that Trócaire's and other charities' funding is greatly reduced this year. Below is a message from Gwen Dempsey, the Head of Fundraising at Trócaire.

Dear Eleanor, Pupils, Staff and Knockavilla NS Community
We hope that you are keeping safe in these extraordinary times.
Donations made through Trócaire boxes each year fund our life-saving programmes around the world. The closure of schools has meant that families were unable to return their Trócaire boxes this year and thousands of Trócaire boxes could be sitting in homes across Ireland.
The contents of every Trócaire box, no matter how small, come together to make a significant difference to the lives of the people we help. Without these donations, we will not be able to provide life-saving support to some of the poorest people in the world. This virus knows no borders, but neither does our compassion.
For those people and families who have been holding on to their Trócaire box, and have not already returned their donation, we are asking them now to make their box count and donate now.

We are running a campaign now (TV, radio and online) to encourage people to return their Trócaire box donations. We are so thankful to the amazing teachers in schools around the country who have been the driving force in our fundraising efforts year after year and we would really appreciate if you could share this message with parents and students. We understand that these are tough times for everyone, and there is added pressure on educators, parents and young people as we head towards the end of the school year but if you do consider our message an appropriate one for you to pass on, it could make all the difference.
